Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.
"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.
He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
